Jane Brown, Team Leader at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (CCP), recently attended the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research’s (CGIAR) meeting on developing transformative gender approaches. The participatory workshop was a unique opportunity to share experiences and best practices from the fields of agriculture, health, development and the environment.

Ms. Brown is of one of the principle innovators of the African Transformation methodology which enables women and men to explore the underlying gender barriers and facilitators to practice positive health behaviors and develop realistic solutions.

In this video prepared by CGIAR during the October 2012 workshop on “Gender Transformative Approaches in Agricultural Research for Development”, Ms. Brown joins other gender experts to describe the shift in norms, attitudes and structures that will need to take place to create a more gender equitable world. Ms. Brown recommends applying the tools and theories of social and behavior change communication that have been developed for health to the agriculture field.
