Social Franchising “Blockbuster,” Knowledge Management and Demand Generation for VMMC in the New GHSP Issue

The latest issue of Global Health Science and Practice (GHSP) highlights social franchising, an enormously successful way to address unmet family planning need and to reach the FP2020 goal of providing access to modern contraception to an additional 120 million clients by 2020.

Two articles showcase the accomplishments made by Marie Stopes International (MSI) and Population Services International (PSI). In just one year (between 2013 and 2014), the total couple-years of protection delivered by the two organizations grew by 25 percent —from 8.6 million to 10.8 million.

In addition, a very high proportion of MSI social franchising clients (68%) chose long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), confirming findings reported in the previous GHSP issue that LARCs can be delivered successfully in many settings.

Another article in the newest GHSP issue breaks down the essentials of knowledge management (KM)—what it is, how it has evolved and is used in global health. The article includes a case study from Bangladesh on the use of KM to improve a behavior change communication program.

Other articles provide recommendations on how to design and implement more effective demand generation interventions for Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision and on ways to better evaluate complex global health initiatives.
