Voices Program Launches Report on Malaria and MDGs

VOICES for a Malaria-Free Future, in partnership with the Global Health Council, Malaria No More, PATH and RBM co-organized a press conference for leading malaria experts, officials and advocates, to announce new findings detailed in Saving Lives with Malaria Control: Counting Down to the Millennium Development Goals, a report published as part of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership’s Progress Impact Series.

Keynote speakers at the conference, which took place on September 14 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C, included, the Honorable Amina S. Ali, African Union Ambassador, Rear Admiral Tim Ziemer (Ret.), U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, President’s Malaria Initiative, Former Ambassador and Congressman Mark Green, Managing Director Malaria Policy Center, Malaria no More, Natasha Bilimoria, Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Authors of the report Thomas Eisele, PhD, Tulane University and Neff Walker, PhD, Johns Hopkins University made a presentation of the main findings of the report.

The report confirms that the current global investment in malaria control is saving lives and that further increases in funding will contribute significantly to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for health. Saving Lives with Malaria Control: Counting Down to the Millennium Development Goals reveals that the lives of almost three quarters of a million children in 34 African countries are estimated to have been saved in the past 10 years through the use of insecticide treated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying, and preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy.

The report estimates that an additional 3 million lives could be saved by 2015 if the world continues to increase investment in tackling the disease.
