The opening episode of Intersexions – a new drama series sponsored by Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa (JHHESA) with funding from USAID and PEPFAR – was watched by more than half of all television viewers across South Africa.

A unique and uncompromising show, Intersexions examines issues, and the possible devastating consequences, surrounding love, sex and relationships. The concept of a “sexual network”, where people who may not even know each other are connected through their sexual relationships, can be confusing and difficult to explain. Enter Intersexions. The television series dramatizes the effects of a sexual network, tracing the movement of HIV/AIDS from partner to partner, through 25 separate but interlinked episodes that explore relationships across age, class, sexual orientation and race.

Patrick Coleman, Managing Director of JHHESA, explains, “The most remarkable thing about Intersexions is that its stories demonstrate how communities and individuals are much more connected than they think.”

While each episode stands alone as an independent story, in the series demonstrates all 25 stories are interconnected; the characters participate in a larger narrative, one in which the HIV virus plays the lead role.

Intersexions is produced by Curious Pictures and Ants Multimedia, in partnership with JHHESA and SABC Education. It is being broadcast on SABC 1 in South Africa on Tuesdays at 8:30pm.
