The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs is co-hosting the first-ever Impact + Profit Conference, a gathering meant to bring together the field of social change and the entertainment industry to harness storytelling for greater social good and measurable impact.

The conference, co-hosted by the Social Impact Entertainment Society, will be held Dec. 7 and 8 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Early-bird tickets will be on sale until Oct. 18.

“We are excited to share our social and behavior change methods – especially our expertise in entertainment education – with a new audience,” says Debora B. Freitas López, CCP’s executive director. “We also are eager to hear from experts in media production and leaders in corporate social responsibility about how to incorporate messages that promote positive behaviors into projects with wider appeal.”

Says Tobias Deml, a film producer who co-founded the SIE Society: “This is a chance to learn how to make impact and profits on your projects and meet producers and storytellers who specialize in social good and build powerful relationships that will take your ventures to another level of effectiveness, profitability and social benefit.” CCP is one of the SIE Society’s founding members.

The two-day event is designed to bring the film industry together with organizations like CCP, an academic organization that often uses media in its social and behavior change communication work. Meanwhile, executives from the film industry will be on hand to reflect on how to both contribute to social good and be profitable at the same time.

Some of the big names already on the conference agenda include Stephen Gyllenhaal, a film director and producer known for Bosch, Billions, Blue Bloods and more; Madeline Di Nonno, president and CEO of the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media; and Christine Simmons, former chief operating officer of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
