The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (CCP) will showcase innovative programs and cutting edge research at the 64th annual International Communication Association Conference. ICA will take place in Seattle and runs from May 22-26, 2014.

The Health Communication Interactive Poster Session on May 24 at 4:30pm will feature presentations by CCP researchers Dr. Carol Underwood and Dr. Rupali Limaye. Dr. Underwood will share her paper Perceptions Regarding Health and Unhealthy Families: Formative Research to Inform Health Communication Interventions in Malawi, which discusses a qualitative study that sought to gain insight into Malawian men’s and women’s perceptions of “healthy families” and the “good life” in anticipation of designing effective health communication programs.

Dr. Limaye will also present research from Malawi, The Role of Communication Networks on HIV/AIDS-Related Behaviors in Malawi, which examines the relationship between interpersonal communication, norms and condom use among sexually active Malawians living in the southern region.

CCP researchers will also be active participants in the Social Norms and Health Interventions Session on May 25 at 3:00pm. Dr. Limaye will present more research on HIV in Malawi. Her paper, Tapping Into Traditional Norms for HIV Prevention: Harnessing the Influence of Grandmothers (Agogos) in Malawi Community Dialogue for Normative and Behavior Change: The Tchova Tchova Project in Mozambique, Dr. Maria Elena Figueroa will share her research on a community intervention in Mozambique that changed HIV risk perception and gender norms perception.
