AcQual III

Improving family planning services and accessibility in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Access and Quality of Family Planning Services 3 Project (AcQual) works in the Democratic Republic of the Congo provinces of Kinshasa and Kongo Central to improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health services, expand the community-based distribution of contraceptive methods and conduct research on innovative strategies for contraception distribution.

CCP works with Tulane University to implement monthly family planning distribution days called Lelo PF (Family Planning Today in the local language, Lingala). During a Lelo PF event, a consultation tent is set up in a well-trafficked area of a neighborhood. Passersby can enter the tent to receive counseling on family planning and the contraceptive method of their choice. CCP is responsible for promoting Lelo PF, as well as creating demand for post-partum family planning more broadly through a mass media campaign in Kinshasa and Kongo Central. Lelo PF is promoted in the neighborhoods where the events take place through large banners, branded motorcycles with loudspeakers playing songs and announcing the events and through community health workers canvassing the neighborhood with megaphones.

The project works closely with the Ministry of Health, including the National Program for Reproductive Health (PNSR) and the National Program for Adolescent Health.

Since the project began, AcQual 3 has:

  • Held 187 Lelo PF events, with an average of 26 events held each month across Kinshasa and Kongo Central
  • Counseled more than 24,000 people during Lelo PF days in Kinshasa and Kongo Central, including approximately 14,000 youth ages 10-24
  • Organized a university-based student competition version of the popular national TV show, Libala ya Bosembo, which includes questions and messages on family planning
