Changing Behaviors, Transforming Lives

This spring marks the end of the eight-year, $500 million Breakthrough ACTION project, USAID’s flagship social and behavior change initiative and the largest project in the history of CCP. Across Africa, Asia and parts of Latin America, more women started using modern contraception, more families slept under treated bed nets to prevent malaria and more people were tested, diagnosed and treated for HIV and tuberculosis.

Breakthrough ACTION’s impact was felt in family planning clinics, where women found less biased providers and stronger health systems, and in communities where health workers went door-to-door to improve health, nutrition and vaccination uptake, be it through one-on-one conversations, gatherings of pregnant women or couples or abuelas. It was felt in the halls of ministries of health, where the project’s evidence-based guidance and technical assistance and research helped solidify the key role social and behavior change plays in making lasting change.

The project created a healthier world ...

In working to address seemingly intractable challenges, the CCP-led Breakthrough ACTION project worked with USAID missions and partners around the world to enable local governments and communities to improve health. In every initiative, communities came first; people came first. Breakthrough ACTION tapped into their lived experiences, understanding their needs, their ideas for what was necessary to thrive and helped put their concepts into practice.
